Sherco got 510 out of the 450 by increasing the stroke, not the bore. The 510 is a torque monster as you can imagine, I have one of each.
The later 500 I'm not so sure if they did bore or stroke.

I think the really important takeaway is all Sherco's finished, that can't be said for any other brands, especially orange and red ones.

Shercos can be made to handle sand pretty well, you only have to watch the lads in the Dakar races to see it, what mods they use I wouldn't know but it can be done.

I have never been any good in deep sand , basically shit scared and wobble around like a drunk at 2am . never gained the skills to do it with comfort so pretty much avoid it . I'm lucky that there are lots of places to go without it .

The thing I like about bladders be it fuel or wine is that you ride until the extra fuel will fit in the main tank then roll them up and they take up no room , fuel bottles I found to be kinda clunky and didn't hold much for the room they took up .
With the wine bladder you could use and discard in the trash then it gives you a dandy excuse to buy another box !

Of course I never expect to be riding in the dark......but it happens. Now I think thta the longer range may just end up in a longer ride in the dark. :O

On my 300 I use fuel bladders in a Wolfman set of enduro bags , a gallon bag fits well . Hell I have been so KLRish to use wine bladders which really do work well too .

I had one of those for my 07 450 and didn't like losing my lights cause I'm not always any where near done riding by dark so I went with a Baja Designs side tank which after a bit of fiddling worked really well and was also bigger .
Just in front of the filler cap I drilled a hole just big enough to take a hose fitting and attached the hose from the bottom of the side tank to it and used a non breather fuel cap  . As the main tank dropped in level it pulled gas through from the side tank and the whole system breathed back through the side tanks cap.

Mate it seems here there isn't much interest in the Dakar , I have followed it since the first Sherco raced in it and it's been fun .ADVRIDER has good threads on it but most there are all about orange flip-flops and red Honda hats .

It really does depend on gearing , I once did an open trail ride in NM and geared my sherco way up , I saw 90mph on the gps and it held 80mph just fine , but with that gearing I wouldn't be doing tight single track .
