STIC metering block w/ 36 PWK Keihin thoughts (2021 2T)
« on: February 23, 2021, 04:24:47 AM »
The STIC metering block was mind blowing in my KTM 250 w/ 38mm Keihin.  In the 36mm, not as much.

It does outperform stock carb even with JD needles, but not by as much as it did on the 250.  I can over-rev where the stock Gnarly pipe falls flat.  It does provide better lugging and stall proofness, just not at the level I experienced with the 38mm carb--compared to stock carb.

The Sherco 300 engine and the 36mm are so powerful stock I don't think the STIC is needed.  The JD needle upgrade to the stock Keihin needles is a worthy upgrade and a lot cheaper.

**one caveat if you ride in varying elevations.  The STIC will self compensate at altitudes.  I ride at sea level and could ride at 10K and it would only require a few turns of the air screw (special replacement STIC screw that you run 2.5-4.5 turns out--if you're unfamiliar with STIC).

I did a recent trip where I rode some much harder terrain with big long climbs and A LOT of lugging.  It wasn't until I rode this terrain and really lugged at gears that I had no business being in did I finally notice the STIC block's performance.  The 300 is so powerful on it's own it was hard to delineate over good stock jetting with JD needle.  When I put the bike to a real test the STIC showed its value.  Its still not as obvious as on my 250 2t, however it was there and it did help.  Do you need it--no.  I was impressed though.  I still say it's not an essential purchase but it does improve the bike when really pushing it.

Hi.

I also have the STIC since last november on my 300 SE-R Factory 2019 and it 's a very good mod !

I have S3 High Comp head, FMF GNARLY PIPE and FMF silencer.

I do hard enduro and MX, I love the STIC.

Before installing the STIC I was 13x49 and now I am 14x49, I could go to 14x48 I think but I don't have 48 teeth sprocket to test. :-)

With the STIC I put on my KEIHIN PWK 36 Short Body:

Winter : 185 / 50   7 slide    N8RE middle clip    Air screw closed   -4.5T / -5T

Spring: 185 / 48    7 slide    N8RE middle clip    Air screw closed    -3.5T / -4T

I think I will change my needle to N8RG because I am using a lot of fuel because I open too much the air screw to versus the too rich needle installed.

What are your settings ?

I have bought a used PWK 38 Short Body to put the STIC inside and to see the diffference with the 36mm but I don't have the time actually to do this ...

've a nice day.  ;)

I have the 114.a tube I think so my jetting may be different.  In my 36 PWK I have the following jetting:  200 Main, 50 pilot, Yamaha NE3J 2nd clip, A/S about 4 turns out.  These are the same settings I have in my KTM with 38 PWK.  It works really well.  I may try the white JD STIC needle this week to crisp up the bottom.  The 200 and 50 jets are perfect and just used needle and clip to adjust.  The beauty of the STIC is you set your main and pilot and fine tune with needle and A/S.  Surprised your using such small main jets.  Your tube may require it??

I have recently put an STIC in my 17 250t and wow does it ever notice I would say itís the best mod you can make soft map is now hard map, hard map is crazy map lugs up hills in 3rd no sweat feels like a completely different bike, itís set with the 114 tube 48 pilot 185 main 3.5 turns on the air screw currently using the n1ef sherco needle but putting a Suzuki NECW in this week I mostly ride at 0-500m between 5c-20c running a 13-50 final drive, also going to put an s3 extreme cylinder head on this week to try and smooth out the power slightly but may go back to the power insert if it lames it down to much
